Vasectomy Reversal

Photo of patient bedsA vasectomy reversal is an operation which is carried out with the intent to regain male fertility after a vasectomy operation. At Oakdin Vasectomy Reversal Clinic, we use the latest techniques in microsurgery which has revolutionised the success rate of these procedures.

Types of Reversal - Vasovasostomy and Vasoepididymostomy

Testes diagram showing Vas Deferens, Testes and EpididymisThere are two types of vasectomy reversal procedures that can be performed; the type of operation carried out by the surgeon is dependent on the location of the initial vasectomy incision:

This is the method of choice but depends on which technique was used during the original vasectomy.

If the vasectomy was performed by an incision through the middle of the vas deferens then rejoining these two ends is called a vasovasostomy.

In this type of vasectomy reversal operation, the vas deferens is joined with the epididymis.

This method is carried out if the original incision is made near the epididymis, or there is permanent blockage of the lower end of the vas deferens due to scarring or infection. The blocked lower end of vas deferens is by-passed and the upper end is joined to the epididymis and the procedure is called a "vasoepididymostomy".

Post Reversal

After the reversal, you will not need to stay overnight. If you are travelling a long distance then we will be more than happy to arrange nearby accommodation.

Sperm Tests

Photo of reception areaAfter the reversal you will be expected to take two sperm tests, which should be carried out on the 3rd and 6th month after the operation. The tests will provide an indication as to whether your operation was a success.

However we do recommend that you get your sperm tests done annually. This is because if the vas deferens is joined correctly sperm can start flowing even after several years.

One of our previous patient’s who had a vasectomy reversal was informed after two sperm tests that his operation was unsuccessful. Three years after the operation he contacted the surgery and requested another sperm test. This time the test was positive and there was enough sperm to achieve pregnancy.
