Vasectomy Reversal FAQs

Is the vasectomy reversal performed using microsurgery?

Yes. At Oakdin the vasectomy reversal procedure is performed by microsurgery.

Is the reversal performed under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia?

The reversal procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia and sedation. The combination leaves the patient in a pain free relaxed state.

Is the operation performed by a Consultant Urologist?

Yes. Our Consultant Urologist FRCS frequently performs vasectomy reversals. As a Consultant, he is able to deal with complications that may arise more effectively and convert any reversal into a vasoepididymostomy if need be. Moreover, he is skilled in re-doing vasectomy reversals.

What is the cost of a vasectomy reversal procedure?

In the first instance you will have to come along for a consultation, which is at a cost of £130. Thereafter if you decide to proceed with having a vasectomy reversal this will be at a cost of £3500. If it is a redo reversal it will be at a cost of £3800. However, we do require a booking fee of £250 which is deductible from the total cost of the operation. Please note that the price is inclusive of 2 sperm tests which are to be carried out on the 3rd and 6th month after the operation.

How long does the vasectomy reversal take?

The vasectomy reversal procedure takes approximately 2.5 - 3hours. It is essential that a family member or friend accompanies you and can take you home after the operation.

Is a vasectomy reversal 100% successful?

A vasectomy reversal is not 100% guaranteed to be successful. Generally speaking, chances of a successful reversal are reduced when a greater amount of time has elapsed between the initial vasectomy and the vasectomy reversal.

What is your success rate?

According to our last audit we have an 81% success rate for patients who have had a reversal within ten years of having a vasectomy. For those patients who had a vasectomy 11 years ago or more our reversal success rate is approximately 65%. These figures may fluctuate slightly over a longer period of time.

I have had a reversal previously which was unsuccessful. Is there any point in trying again?

A re-do reversal is possible. At Oakdin Clinic we have performed re-do reversals with success.

How much time after the reversal will I need to take off work?

This depends primarily on the nature of your work. Generally speaking you will need 7 – 10 days off from work after the operation, but the Consultant Urologist will provide greater clarity on this issue at the consultation.

When will I be able to resume normal sexual activity after a reversal?

This is normally dependent upon the comfort of the patient. However, we generally recommend that you abstain from sex for about 4 weeks.
